Short Thoughts On Marriage

Marriage is wonderful, but unless both are children of God through faith in Christ, and unless both put Christ first as Lord in their lives, then a marriage can never be what the Lord meant marriage to be. This would always be true, but it is doubly true in a day such as our own which is so filled with confusion and tensions. It is only when each one puts Christ first that there can be a sufficient base. And though at first it might seem as though this would be disruptive to a marriage – to have even Christ put before the other one – yet it is not this way. This is so because, if we put Christ before the other person, we will then be able to love and be thoughtful of the other person in a way that would not be possible if that person was put first.

- Francis Schaeffer

Ephesians 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

The reality of life is that unexpected things and accidents will happen. Except in some few cases, we will all grow old eventually. If you can't imagine that fellow ever being willing to help you go to the bathroom, eat, dress, put your shoes on, etc.; you probably should not be considering him for a husband.

Some people say they "must" divorce because they are "incompatible."  What they are really saying is that they themselves are incapable of dealing with incompatibility.  Really, they are saying they are incapable of dealing with real life, because real life is full of situations with which we are "incompatible." They are plainly declaring their own weakness and unwillingness to humble themselves in order to live peaceably with the person to whom they pledged their love and faithfulness before God. Curiously, they expect us to trust them in other areas of life.

1 Corinthians 4:2 Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

Marriages do not fail.  People fail.  This is why it is of the utmost importance to build your individual lives and your life together upon the sure foundation of Jesus Christ, who never fails.  If you are both built firmly on that Rock, your marriage will be also.

Luke 6:47-49 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Before the Wedding

Before I trust my life to you,
Or place my hand in thine;
Before I let your future give
Color and form to mine;
Before I peril all to thee,
Question your soul tonight for me.
Does there within your dimmest dreams
A possible future shine
Wherein your life could henceforth breathe
Untouched, unshared by mine?
If so, at any pain or cost,
Oh, tell me before all is lost.
