Jesus Thy Blood and Righteousness - Gramma's favorite hymn.

Others May, You Cannot - Gramma kept a copy of this in her Bible

A number of these poems are from the Calvert course which Gramma used to teach
her children for the first few grades. She also repeated them for her
grandchildren later; for our entertainment, and some for our admonition. :-)

April by Naomi Loomis - I found this poem in Gramma's handwriting among my mom's
collection of bits and pieces from years gone by.  I'm not sure of the source.

Wishing

Ring-Ting! I wish I were a Primrose,
A bright yellow Primrose, blowing in the spring!
The stooping boughs above me,
The wandering bee to love me,
The fern and moss to creep across,
The Elm tree for our king!

Nay--stay! I wish I were an Elm tree,
A great, lofty Elm tree, with green leaves gay!
The winds would set them dancing,
The sun and moonshine glance in,
The birds would house among the boughs,
And sweetly they would sing.

Oh no! I wish I were a Robin,
A Robin or a little Wren, everywhere to go;
Through forest, field, or garden,
And ask no leave or pardon,
Till winter comes with icy thumbs
To ruffle up our wing!

Well--tell! Where should I fly to,
Where go to sleep in the dark wood or dell?
Before day was over,
Home comes the rover,
For mother's kiss--sweeter this
Than any other thing.

William Allingham

The emerald is as green as grass,
The ruby red as blood,
The sapphire shines as blue as heaven,
But the flint lies in the mud.

The diamond is a brilliant stone,
To catch the world's desire,
The opal holds a fiery spark,
But the flint holds the fire.

The Owl

A wise, old owl sat in an oak;
The more he saw, the less he spoke;
The less he spoke, the more he heard.
Why can't we all be like that wise old bird?
